When I heard that SDL Trados announced AutoSuggest for their upcoming version I was immediately intrigued, because in fact this was a feature I had searched for online, looking for third party solutions and even Open source – only to be gravely disappointed every time.

Imagine being able to rapidly insert the word that you are starting to type, similar to the way SMS text messaging works. Only better. This is what I wanted, but it started to look like a pipe dream. Then SDL released it, from within SDL Trados!

Not only does it insert the word you begin to type, it does so relative to the context. Creating the Dictionaries was a breeze, I just selected a Translation memory and hit a button - done! This will save time, and the saying "time is money" is a hard fact in this business.

I will be able to say yes to more jobs. And this was only one feature, the rest of new Trados Studio 2009 seems to be a huge upgrade as well, with everything tidily in one place, no more separate programs and windows. Well done!

I think the major innovation in SDL Trados Studio 2009 is its level of integration. This goes well beyond the merging of SDLX and Trados, which in itself is the achievement of a long-time ambition. The editing environment in Studio eliminates the need for separate applications such as Workbench and Tageditor.

It also solves the recurring debate on whether to translate doc files in Word or Tageditor, by making them both obsolete. And crucially, it redefines the technology pioneered in SDL Synergy as an all-emcompassing yet non-intrusive hub, since you can tailor how much or how little SDL Trados Studio does for you to each separate project.

Is SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 compatible with previous versions?
Yes of course! Just like SDL Trados 2006 and SDL Trados 2007, the same company has developed SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2! Although SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 is a radically innovative release, it has been developed by the same development team as the previous versions, so is therefore compatible. SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 will enable you to open TTX and ITD files, as well as use translation memories from older versions of SDL Trados. It also features support for industry standards such as TMX (for translation memories), TBX (for terminology databases) and also XLIFF (as a file format for translation).

I heard that you cannot save old translation memory formats within SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2?
You will still be able to save TTX files which can be used to update old translation memories (which is how a good majority of our users update their final TMs). You will also be able to export the new translation memory format into a TMX file format, which can then be imported into older versions of SDL Trados.

I heard that TagEditor and Word will no longer be offered as a translation environment?

Can I work with my SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 Freelance license on a network?

SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 Freelance will work on a workgroup-based network (such as a home wireless network), but cannot be used on domain-based networks. If you wish to work on both workgroup and domain-based networks, then you will need to purchase SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 Professional.

A workgroup-based network (also known as a 'peer-to-peer' network) is two or more computers that are networked together. No one machine is in charge, and security and other settings have to be made on each individual computer.

A domain-based network is where the networked computers (either servers or clients) have a hierarchy. Security settings are determined on the domain controllers (servers) and each machine (client) is authenticated by a server when logging on.

What are the differences between the Freelance and Professional version?
SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 is available in two different versions, Freelance and Professional. The reason behind having separate versions is that freelance translators do not usually require all the functionality within the full Professional license.

The additional features in the Professional version include:

Ability to work on a network: Our Professional version is network enabled and can be used on a domain controlled network.
AutoSuggest creation: Dictionary creation with the revolutionary new AutoSuggest feature only exists within the Professional version. The Freelance version will enable translators to open and use AutoSuggest dictionaries, but they will not be able to create them.
Automated project preparation and distribution through SDL Package technology: Create and distribute projects with SDL Package technology - you can only open and return packages in the Freelance version.
Please note that it is possible to create projects in the Freelance version, but the SDL Package technology and customized task sequencing are available only in the Professional version.
Unlimited language support: Work with as many languages as you want - the Freelance version supports up to 5 languages (which are selected upon installation)
SDL PerfectMatch: Create PerfectMatches (in-context 100% matches) by leveraging your previously translated bilingual files. The SDL PerfectMatch component of SDL Trados 2007 Suite will still be available for this purpose. Users on the Freelance edition will be able to use PerfectMatches, but not create them.

So how much does SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 cost and when will it be available?

What is the difference between SDL Trados Studio 2009 and SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 Plus Freelance?
The functionality of the 2 products is identical and both can be installed on as many PCs as required, however the difference lies within the number of activations available. With the SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 version the activation license can only be used on one PC. It is possible however to return your license through our online system as many time as you like and to re-activate it on a different PC immediately. Whereas, SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 Plus offers the convenience of a license that can be activated on 2 PCs simultaneously, for example a desktop and a laptop.

If you are upgrading an existing SDL Trados license you will automatically receive 2 activations licenses.

Can I have installed on the same PC both SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 and SDL Trados 2007 Suite?
Of course, this is possible. Infact SDL Trados 2007 Suite is also included within SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 as a complimentary component.

What is AutoSuggest Creator add-on?
With SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 Freelance and Freelance Plus, it is possible to use AutoSuggest when translating, provided that a dictionary is supplied to you by somebody who can create a dictionary.
To create an AutoSuggest dictionary you either need AutoSuggest Creator Add-on or a SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 Professional. With either it is possible to create AutoSuggest dictionaries.
